Tangerine Dream Tours North America – Summer 2012

By Lorraine Kay

July 2012 — The iconic electronic music band, Tangerine Dream will be touching down on the east coast for their new ten-concert “Electric Mandarin Summer 2012” tour this weekend beginning Saturday night June 30th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

With a career spanning over 40 years, seven Grammy nominations and an overwhelming discography and filmography of top albums and acclaimed Hollywood scores, Tangerine Dream has done just about everything but a lengthy tour of North America for over 20 years. But TD is more than prepared to give its fans what they have been waiting for – a.ten-concert power-packed tour. The tour will begin in Canada and will continue down through a few eastern states and conclude in California. This rare opportunity to experience this band live is selling out quickly, as fans prepare to travel from coast to coast to be part of the experience.

The band last performed in the United States in 1995 and looked forward to touring again in 2001. But just as they were preparing to leave on tour, the tragic events of 9/11 occurred. Although the band was willing to continue with their plans the families of some crewmembers begged the band to forego the tour out of fears echoed throughout the industry.

The band, which began as a surreal rock band, released over one hundred albums over its 40 year plus years. At a time when electronic instruments were widely misjudged and virtually non-existent, Tangerine Dream was one of the forerunners of a range of new sounds, effects, and production techniques.  Considered by some to be the creators of the electronic music genre, Tangerine Dream’s innovation with the use of electronic instruments and creation of technology to expand the sound is unmatched by few others, if any.

Tangerine Dream is most known for its contributions of film music, having recorded soundtracks for dozens of big budget films including The Thief, Legend, Risky Business and Firestarter, to name a few. A surprise for first –time concert attendees is the powerful live shows performed by the band. Using what would seem to be any and all available high-end products and forms of technology to put on a full-sensored, multi-media show that will include favorites from “Chandra – The Phantom Ferry”; “Finnegans Wake”, “The Angel of the West Window” and “The Island on the Fay, just to name a few.

Fronted for over 40 years by founder and only remaining original member Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream continues to stay at the head of the pack when it comes to electronic music. Continuing to be the undisputed premiere electronic music band in the world, the band does not seem to be losing any momentum, due to Froese, who has maintained the group, holding its standard high through many personnel changes over the years. Under his guidance each incarnation of the band has sustained a place in hearts of its fan base.

This tour, supporting Edgar at his post on keyboards, the wizard of EM, controlling the stage much like the wizard of the Wizard of OZ behind the curtain, but behind his stack of keyboards, will be Linda Spa on melodic wind instruments and Bernhard Beibl on lead guitar; Iris Camaa on percussion and drums; Thorsten Quaeschning on keyboards and Hoshiko Yamane on violin and cello.

The band as a whole without a doubt has an incomparable sound with each of its members contributing to a unique technique that has pushed the boundaries of music for over 40 years.  Froese has been responsible for some of the most important and innovative records and concepts of the last century in music as a whole, not just rock and roll or electronic music.

With the exception of a one-night stand in Los Angeles in 2009, it has been over 2 decades since Tangerine Dream fans have been able to see TD live. This tour will include 10 dates in Canada and the United States. June 30: Jazz Fest, Montreal, QB, July 4: Bluesfest, Ottawa, ON; July 5: House Of Blues, Boston, MA; July 6: Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA; July 7: Best Buy Theater, New York, NY; July 8: Howard Theatre, Washington, D.C.; July 11: Granada Theater, Santa Barbara, CA; July 12: Club Nokia, Los Angeles, CA; July 13: Uptown Theater, Napa, CA; July 14: Mountain Winery, Saratoga, CA
